The Right Instructor

Selecting an instructor for your diving education is not something you should take lightly. The most important factor is not the agency.  The most important factor is the instructor that makes the difference in how much you will gain from the course.

Give your potential instructor a call.

below are a few questions you might ask:

Q: How long have you been diving?

A: I have been diving for 15 years.

Q: Do you take the time to dive for fun?
A: I try to are least once a week.

Q: How long have you been teaching the class?
A: I have been teaching scuba for 5 years and Full Cave for a little over 2 years.

Q: When was the last time you taught the class?
A: That will depend on the class you are interested in taking.

Q: What equipment is necessary for the class?
A: That too will depend on the class, but I have most gear available for rent.

Q: Is there a maximum number of students for the class?

A: Yes, I will keep the class small 2-3 students. This will provide you with a very personalized class.

Q: What sets you apart from other instructors?

A: I will spend the time to insure you have mastery and comfort with the skills learned in the class. When you receive a certification card from me you have earned the card, not paid for it.

The instructor will most likely have a few questions for you as well. This is a good foundation for the instructor student relationship to start.
Contact Previous Students

If you feel comfortable with the instructor after talking with him or her, ask them for the names of some previous students. Some of the questions you may want to ask them include:

Was the instructor patient with you and other students during the course?
Do you feel the class was thorough?

Could the instructor have done anything better?
Do you feel  the instructor fulfill his or her obligations to you?
Do you feel  the instructor compromised your safety at anytime during the course?

Please know, when shopping for technical instruction, it's important to not focus solely on the price. Technical diving can be a deadly serious sport and quality instruction is of the utmost importance. With so many agencies teaching similar courses, the deciding factor becomes the person teaching you to expand your knowledge.
